Xerxes' Background

Species: wayfarer (demi-amorphicus textilus)
Coloration: white with full embroidery
Xerxes lost his companion long ago to a war machine. His scarf is a little short for his age because of that encounter, too.
(In all my musemostwanted requests, Xerxes was blind. For simplicity's sake, I have it so he can see now XD )

Date: 2012-10-11 05:30 pm (UTC)Why, hello!
[He chimes loudly to give his partner energy and keep him aloft as he turns graceful spirals around them. They almost look like they're dancing in midair.]

I was afraid I wouldn't find anyone else.

"I was wandering alone for several days..."
[Xerxes pauses for a little bit]
"We could travel together if you want."

Were you separated then? From another friend?

Date: 2012-10-12 04:25 am (UTC)[Xerxes chimes softly for the new journeyer to follow and flies by his side. They move gracefully through the air toward the mountain. Xerxes speaks to his companion in soft notes.]
"Well...I was left behind by my last partner. I haven't met anyone who actually wanted to travel with me since....well..."
[The memory is very painful for Xerxes to talk about.]
"I had a companion awhile ago, but he was...taken from me too soon."
ee-gads tl;dr ahoy
Date: 2012-10-13 12:44 am (UTC)I see them as something akin to moths, the kind with no mouths. They exist to reproduce, but reproduction by journeyer standards is something much more spiritual. I play with the concept that 'what if the mountain was not only the light they went towards, but was their mother of sorts'. They're born from her light and return to her. Then I go further to think of the mountain as a very ancient and old journeyer that saw wars, etc. She created her own race in hopes of avoiding the evils she saw.
I still try to incorporate the game mechanics and whatnot into my headcanon, that each journeyer goes to die and then they're reborn. Their patterns reflecting their experience. The white cloaks were the 'eldest' of their kind. They know the ropes, they know the journey. I suppose if I were to roll up a legitimate journeyer, I'd change my userpics to the white cloak because I've always toyed with the idea that one of the elder white cloaks wanted something else. They lived and died and they turn away from the light, curious what else was out there.
I've also headcanoned that they're creatures of the light, or of warmth. they prosper in the desert, but in the cold they'll eventually freeze (as we both know). Kind of like beings of energy, the cold slows their energy down so much, they just stop and break. I've also headcanoned that there are two ways a journeyer can die. They're suicidal in nature, in that going to the light (much like a moth going to the flame) is a one way track to their "end" (but they're reborn, something they know but an outsider may not).
They're telepathic, pings and chirps are their physical way of speaking, but anything psychic or leaning more towards the spiritual side would be able to comprehend the pings as full sentences and speech patterns.
Oh, back to the deaths. There's two ways a wayfarer can die, by physical means and by spiritual. If they endure too much physical damage (wear and tear to their cloaks, etc etc) they fall apart or crumple up and fall over. Their bodies disintegrating into the tomb like structure (which is actually apart of their internal structure, like an energy source (and the mountain is a very large one). The second death is the spiritual, where they wayfarer just decides to end their journey. They do not reincarnate this way and it is a true suicide, their bodies and internal stone disintegrating into sand.
So yeah, I think that's all my headcanon. And that's what I was thinking about working with if I was going to rework this character. I didn't really put much thought into scarfenvy other than "I want to ping at people". I mean, he's developed is own kind of personality, so I suppose if I went with the other idea, I could easily make another account that would fit the other wayfarer. ))
[Scarf buddy swirls and swims in the air. This was only his second journey, but he knew of the beasts and what they could do. It was always devastating. He whispers a gentle cascade of coos and chimes. They brush off the cave walls, melodic and inviting.]
I'm sorry. It's always rough when their time comes.
Re: ee-gads tl;dr ahoy
Date: 2012-10-13 04:56 pm (UTC)I never thought about the stone structures being part of them, that's pretty cool :) The mountain being a mother spirit is an interesting idea, too.
I tend to refer to the journeyers as "he" for some reason, though my friends and I went on for several minutes about how they think it's a she. The concept art in my new book really backs them up on that XD. When I first started playing Journey, I made a bio reference for them based on the rule of my universe --> http://laspliten.deviantart.com/gallery/?q=journey#/d55vi0u ))
[Xerxes flew alongside, remaining silent for a moment.]
"I feel like it was my fault... I wasn't being careful and I got spotted. He saved me by taking the hit."
[Xerxes glided with his companion down a dark hallway until they came to a room filled with cloth jellies. Xerxes knew of an energy source here, so he fluttered upward to lead Scarf Buddy toward.]

Do not blame yourself. It was ultimately the beast's doing. They are large and cruel. And heavy like stone.
[He spies the glyph and chirps a thankful, flutey pip as he ascends to catch it and adorn his scarf.]

Date: 2012-10-14 11:10 pm (UTC)"I...wish I could have done something."
[pauses as Scarf Buddy absorbs the glyph, then begins chirping softly again to change the subject. His new companion seemed so curious about this place.]
"Did you know those beasts used to be manufactured deep in these halls? At least...that's what I interpreted from the murals. I could show you them if you want. I could show you many things. I'm very familiar with these passages."
oop late reply is late
Date: 2012-10-19 12:59 am (UTC)[The creature hums, admiring his new adornment and closely circling his white cloaked friend. On cue, he glances around the massive space. He wanted to see more. There was always so much to learn!]
I would like to see them! I want to see everything.
[excited blip of a chirp]
Re: oop late reply is late
Date: 2012-10-19 02:32 am (UTC)[Xerxes easily glides from one cloth jelly to the next, pausing to wait for Scarf Buddy. He chirps in several quick notes.]
"It's a couple rooms down, follow me."
[Xerxes lands on a stone balcony and moves a few paces before chirping again.]
"Please be careful, though...stay close."
[The serene blue lighting was slowly becoming a sickly green...and from somewhere not to far, a foreboding metallic growl sounded.]
Sorry to keep you waiting
Date: 2012-12-18 06:20 pm (UTC)[the red nomad stuck close, cautious and still. The low murmur of metal grinding on metal and the rumble echoing in the vast chamber sent a chill down his scarf. He wasn't frightened, at least not as much as he thinks he should be. The sound was entrancing and a sign of things to come. He looks to his friend.]
The beast is near.
Re: Sorry to keep you waiting
Date: 2012-12-20 01:56 pm (UTC)Xerxes moves slowly along the dark, steep slope, pausing to let the red cloak catch up. The slope is so steep and the sand so loose that he stumbles every now and then, fortunately not sliding down into the war machines' lights.
"Careful...don't slide down now."
Re: Sorry to keep you waiting
Date: 2012-12-20 02:29 pm (UTC)A curious, short ping and he looks to his companion with an air of confusion and a shred of excitement. What will happen next? Fluttering scarfs curling around them and he admires them. Like tails dragging through the air.

"I'll show you all the places I know. The places shown to me by other white cloaks."
Xerxes turns, leading his companion further down the hall. He stood at the edge of a balcony. Below them was a steep sandy slope heavily guarded by several war machines.
"You will need to let me go first, okay? I'll show you what to do."
